The Hockey season 2006/07 got underway on Sunday when BDO Hs got the better of Ta’ Soldi Rabat by 1-0 to take the Super Cup for the third time after their successes of 1990 and 1994. For Ta’ Soldi it was the first time that they lost the Super Cup after four consecutive successes.

The game was an eventful affair with Ta’ Soldi having a clear edge in possession, short corners and scoring chances but BDO were a tough nut to crack with goalkeeper Luke Mallia in fine form and their defence and midfield worked hard to keep Ta’ Soldi at bay. Ta’ Soldi were without Kevin Micallef and Chris Bugeja while BDO were without Simon Baldacchino but gave a debut to new signings Sandro Bartolo and Charles Swain.

The game was decided late in the second half when Ta’ Soldi goalkeeper was judged to have fouled Pace and the umpires awarded a penalty to BDO. Once the protests had subsided, Swain stepped up and scored what was to be the deciding goal.

After the game BDO were presented with the Super Cup by HAM President Chris Busuttil Leaver.

After this first competition, the HAM competitions move on to Sunday when the Challenge Cup gets under way. The five senior teams have been split up into two groups with BDO Hs, Qormi, and Floriana YS in Group A and Ta’ Soldi Rabat and White Hart in Group B.

Qormi and Floriana YS will set the ball rolling while holders Ta’ Soldi Rabat take on last years losing finalists White Hart in the second game.

With these games all teams would have made their seasonal debut and the first opinions may be made of the teams in action.
