This weekend saw Paola Hibs Candy in the ladies category and Aloysians Lipton in the men’s category win the 2006/2007 Super Cup.

The National League also started this weekend with a match between Marsascala and Fleur de Lys.

In the ladies category, Hibs Candy beat X-Sel in a convincing manner 3-0. The Paolites started off well and closed the first set with a score of 25-11. X-Sel were without three of their starting players, Catherine Attard, Charlene Attard and Thais Gatt. Their absence was felt as Claudio Coppini’s and Marvic Micallef’s team struggled to keep Hibs at bay. On the other hand, Hibs were in top form and played their best volleyball this season.

The second set started off in favour of X-Sel, however Hibs gained momentum and reached X-Sel at 14 each. The second set was won by Hibs with a score of 25-20.

The third set was all in favour of Hibs as they managed to close the set 25-11. This was the third consecutive super cup win for the Paolites.

In the men’s category, Aloysians Lipton were all out to take their revenge over a Kerygma side that only last week beat them twice in two close matches to take the Ghaqda Kittieba Sports cup.

This time around, Aloysians won the match in three sets, a far cry from the level of play Kerygma offered last week. The first set was won 25-17 whilst the second went Aloysians way 25-19. In the third set Kerygma tried to offer some opposition but the set ended 25-22 for Aloysians.

The last match this weekend saw Marsascala play against a more experienced Fleur de Lys side. The latter were without their central attacker Jonathan Chetcuti but still managed to overcome their opponents 3-1.

Marsascala, now in the hands of former national team coach Branco Vlahovic, gave a good performance during the first three sets. The first set ended in Fleur de Lys’ favour 25-25 with good performances by Anatoly Debono and Eric Sciberras. Marsascala fought back and won the second set 25-20 only to lose a very close third set 25-23. Aristar Borg, Michael Magro and Silvan Gauci had a number of good spells for Marsascala.

However, the fourth set saw a discouraged Marsascala side take on the court. With the possibility of taking the lead in the previous set now up in smoke, there was nothing to fight about any longer and Fleur de Lys easily closed the set 25-10.
