The speed event was held last month. In all, 10 competitors took part over five laps. The course consisted of very rough terrain and sharp bends which meant that driving experience would be an asset to get to the podium.

Driver Alan Zahra (a.k.a. Pitass), with his newly built 3.9V8 powered buggy, got superb timings which totalled 15mins 07.76secs. However Garry Attard (second place 15.25.84) and Matthew Grech (a.k.a. Coqqa) (third place 16.15.56) were all out to clinch the top position. They were only separated by a few seconds.

The other competitors were also getting superb timings but, as in every sport, misfortunes happen. Last year’s champion Matthew Gatt had to retire due to engine failure. Mario Xuereb, driving the purposely speed built speed buggy, obtained the best lap timing of 2min.51.97secs, but unfortunately developed driveline problems. Karl Buttigieg overturned his modified but despite the incident he managed to continue the race.

The AWDC committee thanked the organisers, marshals and helpers for the successful event. Also special thanks went to the Mellieha Local Council and MEPA for issuing the necessary permits.
