The Malta National Dinghy Sailing Championships 2006 was a spectacular event, both for participants and for spectators alike. The races took off to a good start, benefiting from the calm weather on the days of the competition.

The Championships are organised annually by the Malta Sailing Federation and this year, this prestigious event was hosted by the Royal Malta Yacht Club and sponsored by HSBC Bank Malta p.l.c.

Eight races took place over three days, competing for placings in the Optimist, Laser, Standard and Toppers classes. Thomas Zammit Tabona placed first in the Optimist class, followed by Sean Borg and Ella Fleri Soler all from the Malta Young Sailors Club. In the Optimist Cadet class, Edward Fleri Soler from the Malta Young Sailors Club placed first followed by Roberto Briffa from the Birzebbugia Sailing Club and Karl Miggiani from the Malta Young Sailors Club.

In the girls’ class Ella Fleri Soler placed first followed by Abigail Fenech both from Malta Young Sailors Club.

In the Laser Radial classes, Benji Borg placed first followed by William Camilleri both from the Malta Young Sailors Club and Simon Aquilina from the Birzebbuga Sailing Club. In the Laser Standard, two sailors took part, Peter Valentino from the Malta Young Sailors Club who placed first followed by Mario Aquilina from the Birzebbuga Sailing Club.

In the Toppers class Nicky Sammut from the Vikings Sailing Club placed first, Matthew Scicluna from the Malta Young Sailors Club placed second, while Matthew Farrugia from the Birzebbuga Sailing Club placed third.

Benji Borg from the Malta Young Sailors Club, who sailed a Laser Radial, was awarded the Joe Borg Costanzi trophy as best sailor in the largest adult dinghy class. The Malta Young Sailors Club, for another consecutive year, won the trophy for largest number of entries.

The presentation presentation took place at the Royal Malta Yacht Club.
