It is really sad to read that St Aloysius College has to move with the times and abolish school on Saturdays (TMID, 24 October).

Having Wednesday off was, for us old Aloysians, an important part of our schooling. It enabled us to go on hikes and get to know each other better “socially”, so to speak. When exams drew nearer, those Wednesdays off enabled us to catch up with our studying.

But, most of all, having Wednesday off from school was part of tradition that singled out St Aloysius College from all other schools in Malta, and it is always sad when a tradition is lost because times change.

I do understand the parents who have chosen to vote in favour of including Wednesday as part of the school week. But, on the other hand, I am sure that they could have found ways how their children could be taken care of while they (the parents) are at work.

It is a real pity that this tradition will be lost.
