The volleyball season got underway last weekend with a number of matches from the national League. Top teams in the male and female categories had easy matches and easily gained three points. In the under 18 category, Playvolley, Flyers and Fleur de Lys registered wins which sees them already at the top of the under 18 league.
In the ladies seniors, current champions Paola Hibs Candy faced Playvolley’s second team, Playvolley Reds. The match was just a formality for Hibs as they easily overcame the opposition in three straight sets.
Hibs used a different rotation with Gertrude Zarb in a setter position. Hibs also gave the opportunity to Stephanie Borg and Eleanor Aquilina, two under 18 players to get their first ever taste of senior volleyball.
In the second female match, X-Sel beat Flyers 3-1. It was Flyers that started with some good volleyball and took X-Sel by storm. The first set ended in Flyers favour 25-17.
However, X-Sel settled down and easily won the second and third sets 25-13 and 25-15. Flyers offered some opposition in the fourth set but committed a number of mistakes towards the end. X-Sel made sure of the set by winning 25-22 and winning the match 3-1.
In the men’s category, Aloysians Lipton easily won against Aloysians Whites with a 3-0 scoreline. There was not much competition between these two teams as the Aloysians first team easily put away their younger and less experienced club mates.
One has to praise the work done by David Caruana who is expertly preparing the younger Aloysians teams for a future as one of the leagues better sides.
In the under 18 section, Paola Hibs Candy lost to Playvolley 2-0 whilst Flyers beat X-Sel 2-0. Fleur de Lys won against Kerygma 2-0.
