The result speaks very clearly, there was only one team in the game. Newly-promoted Sirens are in third spot with 16 points from six games and are surely aspiring for promotion to Section A next season. Their keeper Richard Vella had a very easy Saturday afternoon having touched the ball only four times during the game and dealt only with two easy shots.

Zurrieq are still pointless from eight games and have suffered 55 goals and scoring only two. The Sirens front line composed of Zachariha Galea, Alan Xuereb, Giovanni Galea, Jonathan Bajada and Kenneth Pisani were too strong against the opponents slow-moving rear guard and midfield who left many gaps. The only Zurrieq players who showed some bite were midfielder Gareth D’Amato and strikers Glenn Zammit and Kristian Falzon.

Sirens took the initiative from the very first whistle putting Zurrieq under constant pressure. Zachariha Galea crossed from the right to Jonathan Bajada, his header from inside the area was partially cleared and Giovanni Galea missed the upright from the rebound, Zurrieq keeper Owen Grech then saved on Giovanni Galea after a Bajada cross.

The North sea-siders commenced their rout in the 10th minute through Bajada who scored with a lobbed ball from inside the area after being put through by Giovanni Galea and four minutes later the same player doubled with a hard grounder from the edge of the area after an Alan Xuereb through pass.

It became 3-0 on 18 minutes when Xuereb put Giovanni Galea through, the latter crossed to Jonathan Galdes who in turn back-passed the ball to Pisani and netted from close range.

Zurrieq’s only occasion in the first period was a free kick shot by Lee Galea, which was easily cleared by Etienne Sant. Seven minutes before the break Zurrieq netted a fourth goal after a double one-two between Pisani and Bajada and the latter scored after entering the area obtaining a personal hat-trick.

The second period proved to be a very easy task for the Sirens players as they scored eight more goals, an average of one every five minutes.

Between the 45th and 50th minutes three more goals were scored to make it 7-O. Giovanni Galea scored from inside the area after a Pisani through ball, and he scored again after being served by Substitute Derek Galea and Jonathan Gauci after a solo run down the left flank, dribbling past two opponents in the process, entered the area and scored with a rising shot.

Kenneth Pisani added three more goals to make it 10-0 between the 53rd and 70th minutes. He scored from inside the area after a Zachariah Galea cross, with a grounder from the edge of the area after beating a defender and then after a cross by Substitute Dario Conti Substitute Matthew Zammit managed to be among the scorers list as he scored six minutes from time after beating a defender, entered the area and helped by the strong wind netted with a lobbed ball to make it 11-0.

The 12th and final goal was scored from the penalty spot two minutes from the end. Alan Xuereb won a loose ball outside Zurrieq’s area and after dribbling past a defender entered the area and was tripped by Lee Galea who was shown a second yellow card which meant dismissal and Xuereb made no mistake from the spot shooting past Owen Grech for the twelfth time.

Following this result San Gwann are in fourth place on 14 points from eight games and are still unbeaten with three wins and five draws, while Mellieha have only five points from 6 games lying third from bottom. Both sides had some regulars

Mellieha created the first two occasions, from an indirect free kick shot by Mark Vella which panicked the Saints defenders but the ball was somehow cleared and after a faulty back-pass by Andrea Vella, San Gwann keeper rushed out of his charge to avoid the ball finishing over the goal line, which he failed and from Mark Vella’s resultant flag kick the ball was cleared with difficulty.

San Gwann reacted when Ryan Zammit was put through in the area and Mellieha keeper Kristian Fenech, who saved his side from a heavier defeat, came out of his charge and dived at his feet to smother the ball, and Jerome Chetcuti, after a run down the right flank entered the area, Fenech partially saved his shot and the ball was cleared. Mellieha were then awarded an indirect freekick outside the area, the ball was partially cleared and the rebound shot by Ryan Vella missed the bar by inches, at the other end, Fenech saved to corner a shot by Zammit after a Jamin Farrugia through pass.

San Gwann keeper Nicky Azzopardi came to his side’s rescue twice in succession saving a hard grounder by Barren Borg and also dived to save to a corner a header by Robert Muscat after a Mark Vella free kick. Fenech then neutralised a cross by Rudy Pace after a Neil Goodlip through pass and affected a spectacular save to a corner on a Goodlip free kick after Mark Vella handled the ball outside the area.

Mellieha created three occasions in succession. Barren Borg crossed to Ryan Vella and the latter's shot missed the upright, from a Mark Vella flag kick, Azzopardi was forced to tip the ball over the bar after a Mark Trapani header and from another flag kick by Mark Vella the ball hit the bar from a header by Steve Grima with Azzopardi beaten.

Just before the break, Jamin Farrugia served Jerome Chetcuti with a cross from the left and with Fenech out of his charge he failed to connect the ball from one metre with an open goal at his mercy.

Five minutes after restart the referee showed the yellow card to San Gwann player Ryan Belia for arguing his decision. San Gwann kept trying to open the score. Ryan Zammit served Farrugia with a through ball, the latter crossed to Jerome Chetcuti but his shot was cleared to a corner, Farrugia served Goodlip with a through ball, Fenech partially saved his shot and the same player drove out from the rebound. On 56 minutes Jamie Farrugia was the next player to be shown the yellow card for trying to obstruct the Mellieha keeper in executing the drop-kick.

On 57 minutes San Gwann opened the score. Eric Leone served Goodlip with a perfect through pass in the area and the latter scored with a grounder after beating a defender and three minutes later the same player had a rebound shot cleared on the line after a Farrugia shot was partially saved by Fenech.

Steve Grima was shown the yellow card for fouling Jamin Farrugia who tried to retaliate and earned a second yellow card which meant dismissal and this was on 64 minutes.

In a last fling by Mellieha Mark Vella served Branden Zammit with a through ball and Azzopardi saved his shot to a corner, Darren Borg put Robert Muscat through and the latter's cross found no takers in the area and from a Zammit cross Azzopardi saved the weak shot by Muscat. A minute before time Conrad Buttigieg of San Gwann was the last offender to be entered in the referee's black book for a foul on Darren Borg.
