About a year ago, ADT launched the Emissions SMS alert campaign, which initially, I believe, was quite successful in reducing the number of offending vehicles, which were polluting the environment with excessive fumes, from our roads. Unfortunately, this campaign seems to have fizzled out and I am pretty sure it has been forgotten by all, except for a few. In fact, the number of such vehicles is again on the rise. It would be a good thing if this campaign is re-launched and extended to report cars and motorcycles with a noisy exhaust system.

In this country, there exists the phenomenon of cars being modified to the equivalent of a carnival float, irrelevant of all the investment made by vehicle manufacturers to make them safe, both for users and pedestrians. These modifications include the transformation of law abiding exhaust systems into noise generating systems. I would be more than willing to pay even 20c per SMS to report a few of these noise polluting vehicles.

Yes, noise is a nuisance, damaging to our health and the environment. It is about time that the authorities paid by the taxpayer stop turning a blind eye to such abusive behaviour.
