Mqabba 3

Mqabba had an easy passage to the quarter finals of the First Division KO competition, beating Naxxar Lions by three clear goals, even missing two penalties in the process.

John Paul Muscat was surely the man of the match also scoring a goal which reminded the few present of George Best's feats.

Mqabba took the lead after only 80 seconds when Albert Busuttil shot low into the net, following an Edric Borg pass after a corner kick action. Ten minutes later Naxxar had their best chance of obtaining the equaliser but Gilbert Camilleri shot wide from an ideal position.

On 23 minutes Mqabba obtained their first penalty of the match when Kevin Fenech handled the ball inside the area, but from the penalty spot veteran Jesmond Delia shot high.

In the second half Mqabba continued to show the better ideas with John Paul Muscat in top form. Defender Bonnici missed an easy chance in front of goal with Naxxar going close on two occasions through Gilbert Camilleri and a close range shot by Magri.

On 69 minutes Mqabba put the issue beyond any doubt when John Paul Muscat dribbled past a couple of defenders and the goalkeeper to score a beauty. after Mqabba missed their second penalty through Cocks, it was again John Paul Muscat who scored the third goal for Mqabba

Senglea A 1

An extra time header by Matthew Borg was enough for Senglea to eliminate Hamrun Spartans from the competition.

It was a boring match which only came to life in extra time with Senglea's winner and three players sent off. For the Spartans it was the second elimination in three weeks after they bowed out from the U*Bet FA Trophy when they were beaten by Tarxien.

The first half was played at a very slow pace, with the Spartans having the edge over their opponents. However scoring chances were scarce, with the only real danger coming on the third minute when Senglea striker Timmy Thomas headed from close range but the Spartans' goalkeeper Falzon brilliantly turned into a corner.

In the second half the Spartans showing more determination, but nothing more. Glenn Bonello tried his luck from long range but his shot went wide.

On 62 minutes Steve Meilak had a good run on the left flank but Marlon Vella blasted high from an acute angle. In extra time Senglea broke the deadlock after 10 minutes when a Darren Grech freekick hit the crossbar and Matthew Borg was on hand to head home the rebound.

It proved to be the winner. Despite all their pressure, Hamrun failed to save the match.

In the dying minutes Hamrun's Steve Meilak and Senglea's David Gauci came to blows and were both sent off, and just before the final whistle Hamrun finished with nine players when Ryan Fenech was sent off as well.
