Ta’ Xbiex-Kalkara F.C. 0-7

Ta’ Xbiex suffered yet another heavy defeat, their fifth one this season with Kalkara keeping in touch with leaders Sirens.

After eight minutes Kalkara were unlucky with Anton Cassar hitting the post with a close-range shot.

On 20 minutes Kalkara broke the deadlock with Clint Schiavone providing the pass for Joel Grima to hit home from close-range. Three minutes later Kalkara’s debutant Chris Borg (ex-Tarxien R.) had an attempt which was cleared off the goal line but they managed to score in the 32nd minute through Joe Mizzi.

In the 41st minute Kevin Tonna added to Ta’ Xbiex’s misery as he further increased Kalkara’s lead.

After the interval Ta’ Xbiex were nowhere to be seen with Kevin Tonna scoring two goals to notch his hat-trick.

In the 57th minute Kalkara’s captain Nicky Gatt was sent off following an incident with an opponent but they were still good enough to add on to their tally through Joe Mizzi and Mark Scerri for a final 7-0 scoreline!

Qrendi-Mdina Knights 2-1

Qrendi notched their fourth win from five matches and they are now joint runners-up with Kalkara, three points behind leaders Sirens.

Qrendi were the better team throughout the first period and after seven minutes they were close through Kevin Naudi who hit just wide from close-range.

Qrendi were then denied by veteran Mdina keeper Cortis off attempts by Kurt Grima with Mdina responding through a James Vella effort. In the 34th minute Grima hit just high with a strong shot and five minutes before the break he advanced all alone but his shot was blocked by Cortis.

Early on after the change of ends Mdina gained a free-kick which was taken by James Vella and Camilleri brought off a superb save.

In the 61st minute Qrendi were unlucky to hit the crossbar through Guzman but they managed to take the lead in the 70th minute through Karl Vella Petroni after Cortis had saved partially off Tano Farrugia’s penalty kick.

Mdina’s reaction produced a dangerous Matthew Francalanza effort with Qrendi managing to seal the issue on 90 minutes as Mdina’s defender Neville Pullicino committed an unfortunate own goal from a cross by Mansueto.

In added time Matthew Francalanza reduced the arrears for the Knights.

Mgarr-Zejtun 2-0

Mgarr United obtained a very difficult win against Zejtun, the latter suffering their fourth defeat from five matches. Zejtun played the better football during the first-half with the Mgarr keeper Simon Gauci bringing off fine saves to deny Jean Paul Abela.

On another occasion Clive Bonnici headed just wide from a Gerada free-kick and in the 33rd minute a Norbert Gerada free-kick was well saved by Gauci. Four minutes before the break Zejtun missed an easy opportunity through Elton Caruana.

Play remained balanced during the second period with Zejtun being denied by Gauci in the 63rd minute off an attempt by Brian Grech.

Ten minutes from time Mgarr took the lead through a penalty given for a foul by Clive Bonnici on Neil Busuttil and duly converted by Malcolm Bugeja. In injury-time Neil Busuttil scored with a well-taken direct free-kick to make it a final

2-0 scoreline.

Xghajra T.- St Lucia 5-0

Xghajra dominated their match against St Lucia to come out worthy winners with the main protagonist proving to be Alex Azzopardi who notched a hat-trick.

In the opening minutes Xghajra were twice close through Lizio Grech with the Saints hitting the post on 15 minutes through an Ian Cutajar effort.

Xghajra took a deserved lead ten minutes later through Alex Azzopardi and it was again Azzopardi who made it 2-0 after a defensive mistake by Tonio Micallef. In the 40th minute Xghajra were again close through Jonathan Cachia.

The second half proved to be a mere formality with Xghajra completely dominating the proceedings. Alex Azzopardi scored his hat-trick in the 48th minute with Santa Lucia losing their captain Aaron Sciortino in the 59th minute when he was sent off for an incident with the official.

Xghajra created various other goal scoring opportunities but they were still good enough to add on to their tally through further goals scored by Adrian Agius and Lizio Grech.
