MFA President Dr Joseph Mifsud is once again standing for re-election to the UEFA Executive Committee, a post he has been holding since the last 12 years.
A total of 13 prominent football administrators will be contesting the election for the six seats, on top of the presidential one, of those current members whose terms of office are expiring.
The six seats are available for four-year terms for the period between 2007 and 2011, and the closing date for applications was midnight on Sunday. The elections will take place at the XXXI Ordinary UEFA Congress in Dusseldorf, Germany on 25/26 January.
Five of the Executive Committee members whose period in office is expiring are standing for re-election. They are: Senes Erzik (Turkey), Angel María Villar Llona (Spain), Eggert Magnusson (Iceland), Joseph Mifsud (Malta) and Giangiorgio Spiess (Switzerland).
Completing the list of 13 candidates are Gilberto Parca Madaíl (Portugal), Grigoriy Surkis (Ukraine), Rakhat Aliyev (Kazakhstan), Tomas Géa (Andorra), František Laurinec (Slovakia), Liutauras Varanavicius (Lithuania), Vlatko Markovic (Croatia) and Mircea Sandu (Romania).
In addition, the terms of office of four European members of the FIFA Executive Committee will end at the FIFA Congress to be held from 29-31 May 2007 in Zurich, Switzerland. The elected UEFA President will automatically become vice-president of the FIFA Executive Committee. Of the other two vice-president positions, the one currently occupied by David H Will is reserved for a representative of one of the four British associations. It is up to them to nominate this representative for the next four-year term. Angel María Villar Llona (Spain) has applied for re-election as vice-president.
Finally, the current member position of Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder (Germany) will be contested by Angel María Villar Llona (Spain) – provided he is not elected vice-president – and Franz Beckenbauer (Germany).
