For the second time running, the team from Stella Maris College of Gzira managed to win the club championship during the National Club and Individual Championships 2 held at the Furtu Selvatico Trade School of Naxxar and sponsored by British Airways.

No fewer than 36 wrestlers from the senior, junior, cadet and schoolboys’ divisions contested 21 weight categories. Quite a number of bouts were keenly contested and provided the sizeable number of spectators with a spectacle of good standard wrestling.

Top Maltese international wrestler Abraham Vassallo from the team of the University of Malta went up to weights to clinch the 96-120kg category while Emmanuel Cilia of Stella Maris and Johann Camilleri of the University team made a welcome return to championship wrestling winning the 96kg and 84kg respectively.

However, the most keenly contested bout was that between Adam Vella of Stella Maris and Andrea Gonzi representing the University. The contest could have gone one way or the other but at the end it was Vella who managed to win the Cadets 63kg.

Another spectacular bout was that between Aidan Buhagiar of Stella Maris and Charlon Borg of Furtu Selvatico Wrestling Team in the Cadets 85kg, won by the former.

Those present loved seeing in action the young boys wrestling in the Under 12 and Under 10 categories. Parents, relatives and others present understood quite well that Olympic Free Style wrestling could be safely practised by anybody even very young boys.

The presentation of medals and the cup to the winning team will be held on 15 December during a dinner on the occasion of the anniversary of the Federazzjoni Maltija Lotta (Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation).
