The St Paul Choral Society presented a concert of sacred music for soloists, choir, organ and orchestra last month, at St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta, entitled “Mozart in Salzburg” to celebrate the 250th anniversary of his birth (1756–2006).

The soloists were Rosabelle Bianchi – soprano, Claire Massa – mezzo soprano, Charles Vincenti – tenor, and Albert Buttigieg – bass.

Marcelline Agius was orchestra leader and the well-known Elisabeth Conrad provided the organ accompaniment.

The programme consisted of various sonatas and the Laurentan Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary (KV 109) together with the music for a High Mass intended for Salzburg Cathedral (KV 259).

The 60 plus members of the choir, the four soloists, the organist and the competent orchestra gave a good account of themselves. The numerous audience, which included local music aficionados and a large number of tourists, filled to capacity the wide aisle and the sumptuously decorated side chapels of St John’s.

In December the choir will also lead, as in previous years, the singing in the traditional Anglican service of Nine Lessons and Carols held at St Paul’s Cathedral, Valletta, and at the Holy Trinity Church, Sliema. More information is available on [email protected]. s
