The Gozo Regional Committee of Alternattiva Demokratika has noted with satisfaction that the government has partially implemented AD’s suggestion to reduce ferry fares for visitors to Gozo. The price of Gozo ferry tickets has been reduced for trips operated daily after 5.15pm until the end of May. Those crossing with their car will pay Lm3.60 instead of Lm6.75, while passengers will pay 60 cents instead of Lm2.

“Such schemes should be regarded as an investment to help the Gozitan economy and it is only socially fair that some of the profits from this monopolistic company are used so that more Maltese will visit Gozo during the winter

season,” said Victor Galea, AD general secretary and AD Gozo spokesman.

The provision of a shuttle bus service to and from the airport to Cirkewwa and, preferably, to the terminal in Mgarr and

finishing in Victoria, should be one of the government’s foremost and most urgent priorities if the commuting system for locals and tourists alike is to be facilitated.

“Add on a luggage check-in and handling service, and Gozo will be able to attract some of the independent travellers using the new low cost flights.

“What is holding the government back from at least promoting such a service for the much needed tourists?” asked AD chairman Harry Vassallo.

AD thanked all the Gozitan restaurants and establishments in the accommodation sector that have chosen to take part in the scheme by refunding the cost of the ferry crossing for each visitor who spends Lm10 or more on food or lodging in their establishment.
