One of the greatest challenges facing the automobile industry is to lessen the impact of noxious vehicular emissions. The 34CleanAir initiative being launched between the Malta Transport Authority, the Rural Affairs and the Environment Ministry and the Association of Car Importers aims to contribute to a cleaner environment.

To launch this initiative, the members of the Association of Car Importers are donating 220 trees which are being planted at Kennedy Grove, Salini.

Customers purchasing new vehicles will be encouraged to participate in this initiative by giving a social contribution of Lm6 for a tree which will be planted along the arterial and distributor roads to further improve the landscaping on our road network infrastructure.

Persons buying these trees will be invited to plant the tree themselves, and their tree will be identified by a wooden tag attached to it bearing the name of the person who buys it. A photo commemorating the event will also be taken, the cost of which is all included in the price of the tree. After planting, continued maintenance will be guaranteed by the Government.

Leaflets and posters promoting this initiative will be available from the ADT offices as well as from the showrooms of the various car importers members of the Association.

The Malta Transport Authority encourages entrepreneurs in the transport sector, vehicle owners and persons buying a vehicle to participate in this initiative. A lottery will take place every two months for all those participating, and the winner will receive a free set of personalised number plates of his or her choice. The first one will take place in the end of February 2007.
