This weekend is the prelude to the fast approaching holiday break from football and is offering some entertaining encounters. Yesterday, third placed Arsenal welcomed fourth placed Portsmouth to north London, while Liverpool were also in the capital, playing Charlton at The Valley.

Martin O’Niell and Aston Villa play Bolton at Villa Park. Wigan will be hosting Niel Warnock’s Sheffield Utd as both teams try to get away from the bottom half of the table. Reading play Blackburn and Newcastle host Watford on Tyneside.

Today the action starts in the early afternoon as second placed Chelsea travel to Goodison Park to play Everton. The City of Manchester Stadium sees home side Manchester City play Tottenham. West Ham Utd, under the reign of new manager Alan Curbishley, have a tough game against leaders and high flyers Manchester United.
