The second edition of the Würth Malta Optimist Dinghy Association Regatta was held over two days last month.

The newly refurbished Adira Sailing Club in Ghadira Bay with its excellent services and adequate facilities was the Regatta’s venue.

The Club’s elevated terraces presented the numerous spectators with a grand stand view of the gallant young sailors from the age of 8 up till 14 years, enjoyably handling their boats and thrashing about in the choppy sea.

Sailors raced six close races around the course and this confirmed that good coaching skills are yet again paying off. Indeed, it was at times hard to predict the order in which boats would pass the marks. In this Regatta the seasoned group of sailors were joined by a number of novices.

These sailed a shorter course, and just as desired, they came off the water with an encouraging glowing smile and a good feeling of completing their first races ever.

The Race Committee, headed by Peter Dimech, set a course on the same parameters that will eventually be used during the forthcoming Euromed International Regatta.

This course layout was identical to that implemented at the World and European Championships.

At the end of the successful weekend Mr Paul Cremona, Purchasing and Product Manager of Würth Limited presented the prizes to the various winners.

Peter Valentino, President of the Malta Optimist Dinghy Association, highlighted the importance that a quality sponsor and partner like Würth plays in the overall success of an event and he thanked them for their continued support.

A word of appreciation also went to the sailors, the parents, coaches, the Race and Organising Committees. A special feature on the event will be transmitted in Teddie Borg popular TV programme ‘Starboard’.
