Eighteen members of the staff of the British High Commission, led by High Commissioner Nick Archer, converged on Salina on Friday, to plant 60 trees as part of the national 3-4-U campaign.

The tree-planting campaign is an initiative of the Rural Affairs and the Environment Ministry, that aims to encourage the public and members of national institutions, businesses, unions and voluntary organisations to embrace the concept of a greener, healthier Malta by planting trees.

“Environmental issues are moving up the High Commission’s agenda, with the recent Nick Stern Review on Climate Change, written by England’s Chief Economist, being a major focus for dialogue with the Maltese authorities,” said British High Commissioner Nick Archer.

“Stern argues that while the challenge is huge, every small initiative helps. So today’s event not only contributes to the greening of Malta but also proves the commitment of the British government and its representatives all over the world, to the fight to stop climate change.”

The activity was one in a long line of local environmental initiatives involving UK input. British consultants have also been involved in the Maghtab rehabilitation project and in providing training to Mepa in a number of areas.
