President Edward Fenech Adami yesterday awarded the Worker of the Year Award to James Mercieca, a senior technical officer in Electrical Services Department in the Resources Ministry.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, Youth, Education and Employment Minister Louis Glea and previous winners of the award were also present at the ceremony.

Mr Mercieca has worked as a civil servant for the past 30 years and is now responsible for the installation and maintenance of over 160 sets of traffic lights around Malta and Gozo.

He also took care of various large projects, including the installation of the electrical system in Mdina, Hastings Garden, Mall Gardens and Paceville, the Wignacourt Aqueduct and Sliema Promenade among others.

The selection committee received 17 nominations this year.
