Enjoyable Concert but…

Malta Independent Thursday, 21 December 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

Andrea Bocelli’s concert on 16 December was highly enjoyable.

I was very impressed by the Maltese participants Lydia Caruana and the national orchestra, who both displayed splendid professionalism.

Unfortunately this cannot be said of the producers of the commemorative programme.

Where else, in an official programme, are the singers not named but just described as “baritone” and “soprano”?

The short biographical write-up on Maestro Carlo Bernini (who, by the way, excelled) was a hotchpotch of poor vocabulary, grammatical mistakes, bad punctuation and misspellings – for example “like” instead of “as”, “artistical” for “artistic”, “cooperating” for “collaborating”, “is” instead of “has”, “prestigius” for “prestigious”, “like” instead of “such as”. In addition, the cities of Hamburg, Stockholm, Munich, Prague and Moscow were mentioned by their Italian names.

It is obvious that this was the work of an Italian with very limited English and it should have been edited and proofread before publication.

The butchering of the English language is unforgivable and inexcusable.
