The Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation celebrated its 37th Anniversary since its foundation in 1969 with a dinner during which cups and medals were presented connected with competitions during the 2005-2006 seasons. A good number of wrestlers, their families and friends attended.

Stella Maris could well be called the team of the year since it won the national club championship and the British Airways Youth League 2005-2006.

This team made it a hat trick through Cadet Aidan Buhagiar's winning the Youth Wrestler of the Year, an award sponsored by the Ghaqda Kittieba Sport (Malta Sportswriters Association). This young wrestler had quite a successful season especially with a good result at the 2006 Commonwealth Youth Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

On the other hand, international wrestler Abraham Vassallo got his ninth consecutive Wrestler of the Year Award. Last September Vassallo won his weight category's gold medal in the Grand Prix Sicilia held in Palermo without conceding a defeat after overcoming Polish, Romanian and Italian opponents. A few weeks later he placed first in the International Friendship tournament held in Malta organised by the University of Malta.

Concluding a successful evening Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation President Simon A. Bonello after congratulated all those receiving awards stated that his federation was investing in youths with the aim that in four years' time could have a team good enough to represent Malta in top international senior competitions.

He said that Maltese Olympic Style Wrestling was and will be a clean sport free of drugs. His last words were that there will never be a place for any substance that would cheat and or cause damage to health.

All those present had the occasion to collect a copy of the federation's 2005-2006 annual. This publication is of interest not only to wrestlers and members of the Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation but is also a source of information for all those interested in sports in general especially sports journalists.
