Frans Borg, Permanent Secretary of the Education, Youth and Employment Ministry, together with director general Cecilia Borg, presented 15 trainee inclusion coordinators with laptops which will be used to improve and enhance the services that are being provided as regards children with special needs in mainstream schools. The 15 teachers are at present following a two-year course at the University of Malta leading to a post-graduate diploma in education (inclusion and individual needs in primary schools).

The whole course is part-financed by the European Union through a European Social Funds Project of the Structural Funds Programme for Malta 2004-2006. The ESF Project was negotiated by the Department of Student Services and International Relations of the Education Division.

As part of their study course these 15 teachers have also undergone a two-week placement visit to the UK, where they received first hand experience of an established service of coordination of inclusive arrangements within schools through association with special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs). SENCOs have been statutorily established in the UK for the past decade so that now every school in the UK has a SENCO.
