A Healthy and friendly learning environment

Malta Independent Saturday, 23 December 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

The MCAST Students’ Council wishes to take this opportunity to state that it deplores any sort of bullying in all educational institutions. The recent incident at the MCAST cannot go by without appropriate measures being taken to ensure that such incidents do not occur again.

The truth is that bullying thrives on silence and people who are being bullied often feel that there is nothing to be gained by speaking out against someone who bullies others, thus allowing it to continue. In this regard, student organisations should embark on creating awareness and structures to help students to speak out when bullying occurs. This will reflect on the student organisation as one that has a social conscience and that offers support and solidarity to students. For this reason, the first MCAST Student Council will seek to actively contribute towards a healthy and friendly learning environment.

Such an environment should not only be felt on the days following incidents such as this recent experience but throughout the entire year. Everyone should remember that members of today’s young generation are the country’s future citizens upon whom the growth and development of our nation will depend.

The educational investment has to be holistic to the extent that students are not just recipients of the various subjects they learn but will grow into responsible and mature young men and women who will be able to contribute towards a healthy society.
