YWCA (MALTA) Concert

Malta Independent Sunday, 24 December 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

A delightful evening of music, mime and Spanish dancing was recently hosted by the committee and members of the YWCA (Malta), very generously sponsored by Austrian ambassador Dr Elisabeth Kehrer.

Malta’s popular concert pianist Cynthia Turner, who is vice-president of the YWCA, organised the programme, which was presented in her elegant studio in Gzira.

Although the evening was dedicated to the memory of Mozart, the Austrian composer whose 250th anniversary has been celebrated this year, the programme was opened by Zeng Yixiang playing a Prelude by Bach.

Ms Turner’s successful student, pianist Geoffrey Tanti, then played a Mozart Sonata, followed by John McDonough and Geoffrey Tanti who performed a Mozart Adagio for oboe and piano, a melancholic and haunting tune that was oddly familiar.

Cynthia Turner and Geoffrey Turner – at two pianos – played the Mozart Piano Concerto 450 in B flat (1st movement), an intricate duet that was enjoyed by all.

The programme then changed direction and was given over to mime and Spanish dancing.

YWCA member Anna Chetcuti Bonavita performed a mime/dance entitled Life is beautiful, dedicated to everyone working for a better life, with music from the film La Vita é Bella by Roberto Benigni.

A series of Spanish dances, including tangos and Sevillanas, were presented by the group La Zambra Flamenca Dancers comprised

of Anna Chetcuti

Bonavita, Alexia Eminyan, Carolina

Mattocks, Claire

Sapiano, Charmaine Tanti and soloist Jenny Vassallo.
