Let The Dead Bury Their Dead (Mt 8: 22)

Malta Independent Sunday, 24 December 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

Another area in Nadur is going to succumb to development. Yes, it is to bury our dead, who deserve our every respect. But it is going to mark that part of Nadur leading to Ramla. And it is a development on a slope. So we are going to move down slopes with development. And I hope that using this excuse, the whole area will not be released for construction.

You of the Mepa board, you who should be the protectors of the natural environment – you do not have an environmental conscience. You are more like puppets on a string, or maybe like a bog from which – every now and then – a big bubble of gas pops out, revealing the decomposing matter beneath. This is borne out by the facts because you went against the recommended decision in the DPA report. Why did you not conduct an exercise to find a more suitable place or tell the applicant to do so – maybe near the existing cemetery alongside the street. Land can be expropriated.

And you leaders of the church – you, by your example and silence, are not displaying an environmental conscience. You should have found another place in which to build this cemetery. Your responsibility should be more to the living – and the living who are poor. If we deplete our natural environment, we will all be poorer.
