Mailing Scam in Malta

Malta Independent Sunday, 24 December 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

From Mr O. Armani

I received a letter from Spain regarding a huge lump sum of money that I had allegedly won. Well, I had never bought any ticket or was part of any competition in Spain so I smelled a rat immediately. The letter said that I had to contact a claims agent to give me instructions how to proceed and claim my prize.

I called overseas on a premium rate call (which costs a lot) and the instructions were to complete the payment processing form (attached to the letter) and send it by fax immediately.

Naturally, I omitted my bank information and requested that the cash prize be sent by cheque. Before sending the fax I decided to check out online what this is all about, and thank God I found out in time that it is all a scam, worldwide!

Apparently after faxing your details you are requested to transfer some money to these people for processing fees and so on. To my knowledge you don’t have to pay a dime to claim a prize.

I am sending you a copy of this letter, hoping that you publish it in your newspaper so that other people do not fall victim to these criminals. I am also sending a copy, together with the envelope, to the Spanish Embassy hoping that action will be taken. I don’t think the local police can do much about this matter, but still I think that there’s no loss in informing them as well.
