Against Cruelty to animals

Malta Independent Friday, 29 December 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

For the past 50 years, the Captive Animals’ Protection Society (CAPS) has been at the forefront of the UK campaign to end the use of animals in circuses because of the inherent cruelty. As such, we fully support the campaigns by animal rights organisations in Malta to encourage the public to boycott the animal circus. Travelling circuses, by their very nature, are incapable of meeting all the needs of animals. A wide range of wild and domestic species are transported long distances for months, confined to temporary and inadequate housing and subjected to often cruel training methods, simply to perform in the circus ring.

Quite simply, we do not have the right to make animals perform just for our entertainment.

Around the world, more people visit only all-human circuses, and many circuses have dropped their animal acts. An increasing number of countries are prohibiting animal circuses in recognition of the cruelty involved. We would appeal to the people of Malta to support those animal protection organisations opposing animal circuses and to do all they can to help achieve an end to this cruelty once and for all.
