Although no target was set for this year's L-Istrina, the well-known generosity of the Maltese has not failed those who are in need of help.

The new massive tent at Ta’ Qali, which a fortnight ago hosted famous Italian singer Andre Bocelli, was the venue for this year’s 12-hour charity drive that saw the participation of around 250 personalities.

The tent was a hive of activity yesterday during the annual event, which began at midday. There was a festive atmosphere during the marathon event, that was hosted by several personalities and broadcast on the three main television stations.

Those who donated money this year had a chance of winning more than Lm250,000 worth of prizes. The gifts, which are intended to act as an incentive to get people to phone and donate money, included several cars, iPods, PDAs, Playstations, Plasma screens, cruises, holidays, bedroom furniture and complete bathroom fittings.

A total of 14 organisations will be benefiting from the money collected this year, with the Malta Community Chest Fund receiving half the proceeds.

The other half will be distributed among the Malta Cancer Foundation, Dar il-Kaptan, the Arka Foundation, the Oasi Foundation, the Little Sisters of the Poor, St Rita Home, Don Bosco Salesians, the Equal Partners Foundation, the Eden Foundation, the Richmond Foundation, the Jesuits Refugee Services, SPCA and Reaching Out.
