This year’s Worker of the Year award has been given to James, better known as Jimmy, Mercieca.

Jimmy is Senior Technical Officer in the Electricity Section of the Services Department in the Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure.

He started off in government service when still only 16 years old as an auto electrician.

Today he is responsible for the over 160 traffic lights in Malta, and also for the over 100 other jobs his section is responsible for, which range from the electrical installation at Hastings Garden in Valletta, the lighting up of the Sta Venera Aqueduct, the Mdina lighting project, the Upper Barrakka and the Wied Babu projects.

He is also responsible for the maintenance of the Valletta bastions floodlighting, that at Fort St Angelo, and Republic Street in Valletta as well as a host of others.
