Malta Independent Sunday, 31 December 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

Bottom placed San Gwann obtained their first victory of the season against league leaders Qormi, in a dramatic match in which five players were sent off. The league leaders can consider themselves unlucky not to take at least a point from this match with Johann Zammit hitting the crossbar twice in the dying minutes of the match.

San Gwann played the better football in the first half, and their 15th minute lead was not surprising.

Credit goes to Chris Cuschieri for San Gwann's opener as he passed a good ball to Robert Brincat who easily slotted the ball home. Cuschieri was again instrumental minutes later but the Qormi defence managed to block.

San Gwann goalkeeper Spiteri saved on Zammit on 25 minutes. Qormi played better in the last minutes going near with shots from Borg Olivier and Farrugia.

The second half was ill-tempered with three red cards in the opening ten minutes. Borg Olivier and Saliba almost came to blows and were both sent off on 50 minutes. Six minutes later Qormi lost one of their best players, Australian Talcevski.

However San Gwann's numerical superiority lasted only ten minutes as both sides were reduced to nine players when San Gwann's Alan Borg was sent off. And to make matters worse for San Gwann, they even lost lost Robert Brincat for dissent on 70 minutes.

With nine men against eight, Qormi surged forward for the equaliser, with San Gwann defending with all their might. With eight players and with ten minutes to go San Gwann doubled the score through Clint Gatt.

Qormi were now desperately in attack and five minutes from time they reduced the arrears when Carmel Formosa scored from close range. San Gwann goalkeeper Spiteri saved the day when he blocked a close range shot by Zammit.

The same Zammit was unlucky minutes later when his first timer slammed against the crossbar. And Zammit's and Qormi's despair was complete in injury time when his header was again stopped by the crossbar.
