Football – Bank Of Valletta Division I: Hamrun Spartans move into second place

Malta Independent Sunday, 31 December 2006, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

An early goal scored by Kevin Borg gave the Spartans their second consecutive win, as they are now in second place a mere point behind leaders Mqabba and Qormi.

For Vittoriosa this was a setback following two consecutive wins. The match never reached high standards, with the Spartans dominating the early stages of the match and with the Stars unable to save the match, even though enjoying numerical superiority in the last part.

Hamrun forged ahead on three minutes when Kevin Borg scored from close range after a Fenech cross that was nodded down by captain Stefan Sultana. Hamrun continued to play the better football and a Fenech shot went inches wide. On 33 minutes it was Timotic's turn to try his luck but his shot went wide.

In the second half Vittoriosa goalkeeper Cassar saved his side when he blocked a dangerous shot by Fenech. Cassar's best save came on 65 minutes when he deflected a close range header by Timotic.

On 74 minutes Hamrun's Roderick Fenech was given marching orders for retaliation. Vittoriosa tried to make the most of their superiority and the Hamrun custodian Falzon made his first save of the match off an Anywanna header. A minute later Timotic came to his side's rescue when he cleared off the line an Anywanna shot.

Hamrun could have wrapped the match ten minutes from time with a good Ryan Fenech run ending with a pass to Mangion whose shot was well saved by Cassar. In injury time Vittoriosa's Cachia shot weakly in Falzon's waiting hands, and on the other end substitute Steve Meilaq missed an easy chance all alone in front of goal.
