I Have a dream, which up till now has not come true

Malta Independent Thursday, 4 January 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

We, who call ourselves Christians, are acting in an unchristian manner. I am referring to us Maltese and millions of other Christians all over the world.

We preach solidarity, fraternity, and compassion and love, yet looking around, we see bloodshed among ourselves. You name it, you have it. A case in point is Mother Ireland, where Catholics and Protestants butcher each other, where violence reigns supreme. But it stops for Christmas and New Year. What hypocrisy.

Divided we are, divided we stand. There’s no way to move forward. Major leaders of the world herald peace. What peace?

A look around makes us shiver. We live in supreme arrogance and yet we smile, shake hands and wish all the best to one and all.

I always dream, a dream within a dream. Can we as a nation look forward to being united in solidarity with our political diversity and may I make my humble suggestion? How about the Prime Minister and the Opposition leader making a fine gesture next Easter by standing together and extending the true Christian spirit of the Risen Christ to all well-wishers, without political diversions.

Well that would be something. The great majority of us would appreciate it as it would show that we truly act as we believe. Love, solidarity, hope and understanding. So help us God.
