The Institute of Directors (IoD) Malta Branch and the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) are launching a national programme to provide Maltese company directors with extensive training and practice in various areas of company direction.

The Director Development Programme for Malta is a five-year initiative to improve corporate governance and drive business competitiveness.

The programme is integral to IoD policy, which began at the request of MFSA chairman Professor Joe Bannister, as part of efforts by both the public and private sectors to expand and improve director education for people living in Malta. The programme fits in naturally with the overall goals of the IoD and the MFSA, and will reinforce the skills necessary for Maltese company directors to gain a stronger understanding of how to profitably address critical business requirements.

Over the next few weeks, more than 200 local directors have the opportunity to acquire new knowledge and skills during the first

training sessions. Led by Peter Barrett, the winter workshop series will teach management skills and techniques that will improve access to, and

delivery of, mission-critical activities.

Peter Barrett has designed this programme to meet the needs of owner managers upon whom the survival, success and growth of their business depends; middle and senior managers in larger companies who are being groomed for board status or are required to work at strategic level and interface directly with the board; public sector managers who interface at a strategic level with the directors and owners of private companies and rising stars who want to supplement the academic basis of, say, an MBA.

The winter workshop series will enable participants to understand the rewards and risks of being a board member; choose the right board structure for their business; get the strategy right and predict the impact of their decisions and, most importantly, be in a position to measure their success.

Participation in this

winter workshop series will provide delegates with:

1. Discussion of the direction of organisations in the context of both privately and publicly-owned companies and of organisations in the public and social enterprise sectors.

2. Knowledge of the law relating to directors liabilities and of the application of corporate governance to building an effective organisation.

3. A clear understanding of the concepts, principles and nature of the direction of organisations.

4. A clear understanding of the leadership and organisational issues involved in stakeholder management and performance delivery.

5. The basis of a review of professional competence and personal development as a director.

The winter workshop series offers practical and pragmatic workshops to enable an effective contribution to the work of local company directors within their boards.
