Siggiewi-Qrendi 1-2

Mario Mifsud’s team Qrendi had to fight hard to obtain the three points in a difficult match against Siggiewi.

Qrendi ended the match with nine players after having Tano Farrugia and Joe Mercieca sent off during the second period.

Siggiewi created the better chances early on in the match but gradually Qrendi gained the initiative and on 20 minutes a Tano Farrugia free-kick was saved with difficulty by Azzopardi.

A minute before a Siggiewi defender cleared the ball off the goal line to deny Qrendi’s striker Kevin Naudi but the same player managed to score two goals in the 68th and 70th minute to give his team a 2-0 lead.

Siggiewi’s late goal scored by Josef Micallef caused some worrying moments for Qrendi but they managed to hold on to their slender lead despite having Farrugia and Mercieca sent off by referee Debono.

Pembroke-Mgarr 1-3

Joe Grech’s team Mgarr United maintained their unbeaten record as they defeated Pembroke Athleta in a very difficult match.

Pembroke dictated the run of play for long stretches during the first period but they were rather ineffective infront of goal.

On 31 minutes David Muscat put Mgarr 1-0 ahead with a close-range shot with Pembroke responding through dangerous efforts by Leonardi and Zampa.

Five minutes before the break Pembroke drew level through a Robert Zammit penalty-kick.

During the second period Pembroke still pressed forward but Mgarr managed to forge ahead with Neil Busuttil beating Debattista from a well-taken free-kick.

In a counter-attack four minutes from time substitute Alan Chetcuti sealed Mgarr’s win with a cute lob.

Kalkara-Xghajra 0-3

Kalkara’s promotion ambitions suffered a severe jolt when they were soundly beaten by Xghajra. Kalkara gained the upper hand in the midfield sector but they lacked incisiveness infront of goal.

Five minutes before the break Xghajra broke the deadlock as Neil Attard’s tremendous volley finished in the top right hand corner of the net.

On 48 minutes Kalkara’s midfield player Kevin Tonna was sent off for retaliation and in the 72nd minute they were unlucky as Clint Schiavone’s shot bounced off the upright.

In a counter-attack in the 76th minute Neil Attard made it 2-0 for Xghajra with a low shot and in the 85th minute Neil Attard crossed for Adrian Agius who beat Elvin Attard from close-range to make it 3-0.

Mdina K.- Kirkop 4-1

This is a fair win with the Knights attacking for long stretches as they managed to turn defeat into victory through second-half goals scored by Matthew Francalanza (twice), Ian Sammut and Ayrton Buhagiar.

Mdina held the initiative for long stretches throughout the first period but it was Kirkop who created the first opportunity through Mark Farrugia whose free-kick hit the crossbar.

Mdina went close through Liam Mercieca and wasted an easy opportunity through Matthew Francalanza.

Six minutes before the change of ends Chris Farrugia put Kirkop 1-0 ahead with an inswinging corner-kick.

Twelve minutes into the second period Matthew Francalanza obtained Mdina’s deserved equaliser with a low shot.

Mdina’s sustained efforts led to their second goal scored by Ian Sammut ten minutes from time. In the 86th minute Ayrton Buhagiar scored Mdina’s third goal but he was involved in an incident and was shown the red card. Just before the final whistle they added a fourth goal through Matthew Francalanza.
