Works team event

Ten teams recently took part in the second works team tournament organised by the Malta Squash Academy on behalf of the Marsa Sports Club.

The teams were divided into groups with each team playing 2 or 3 group stage matches before progressing to the later stages.

Five senior national team players were taking part together with a number of experienced players and also a few ‘beginners ’ along with three of Malta’s top juniors giving players of all standards some interesting games.

The less experienced players had the chance to compete against national team players, with some recording excellent results. The three juniors gained valuable experience of squash in a team environment and casued many of the more experienced players a problem or two!

The first round group matches produced several surprising results.

The first ‘upset’ was the victory by the Squash Academy Juniors against the Malta University ‘B’ team.

All three juniors showed remarkable composure and ran out a very close 2-1 winners against a much older and more experienced University ‘B’ team.

The Malta University ‘A’ team recorded two excellent victories against Frank Salt Real Estate and the Marsa Sports Club teams and progressed as group winners to the final stages and were joined in the finals by BOV and Methode.

The tournament favourites BOV remained in control in both final matches and ran out comfortable winners against both Methode and the University ‘A’ teams.

BOV, represented by Stephen Schranz, Cliff Pace and Martin Mangion, were presented with their winner’s trophies by Academy Coach and tournament organiser Paul Lake.

Marsa Squash section chairman Charles Cuschieri thanked everyone involved and announced that the next team event would be held in April and that following the all-round positive comments after the tournament the next event is expected to be ‘bigger and better’
