The Equal Partners Foundation expresses its satisfaction that the United Nations approved the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

This convention was passed by 102 votes to five, with eight abstentions. It covers all aspects of life, including the right to life, liberty, security, independent living, freedom from exploitation and an adequate standard of living and social protection.

In particular, the foundation noted that Article 29 states that “parties shall guarantee to persons with disabilities political rights and the opportunity to enjoy them on an equal basis with others.”

The foundation strongly suggested to local political parties to take due action to ensure the inclusion and empowerment of all disabled persons in the political process, especially in the selection of our representatives.

It urged the local authorities and non-governmental organisations to promote this convention and in particular, to ensure that the rights of all the disabled persons in Malta are protected and fully realised.

“We also exhort our government to ratify and implement this convention fully,” the foundation said.
