International Taxation conference

Following the success of its Advanced Diploma in International Taxation, the Malta Institute of Management is holding an international conference on the subject “International Taxation”. The conference will be held at The Radisson SAS Baypoint on Friday and has been promoted abroad, mainly in Italy and the UK. This is the first event of its kind to address international tax, and it is the intention of the Malta Institute of Management to turn it into an annual event.

• The conference speakers include:

Professor Philip Baker, who joined Chambers in 1987 having been a full time lecturer in law at London University from 1979 until then. He has maintained some links with academia, and is now Visiting Professorial Fellow in International Taxation at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary, University of London.

He specialises primarily in international aspects of taxation, which covers both corporate and private client matters. He also has a particular interest in taxation and the European Convention on Human Rights, on which he has been involved in training the general and special commissioners and members of VAT tribunals.

He is a member of the Council of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, the Committee of the UK Branch of the International Fiscal Association and the International Tax Sub-Committee of the Law Society.

In 1987 he was awarded an OBE for his work with Chinese political refugees in the UK.

• Helen Ghezzo, an international tax manager with De La Rue plc.

• Matthias Lefarth, Head of Finance and Tax Department of the German Association of Small and Medium Sized companies.

• William Morrison, Senior VAT consultant of Accordance Ltd.

• Dott. Roberto Geraci, Dottore Commercialista e Revisore Contabile of Studio Dottori Commercialisti e Associati admitted to practise before the Italian tax court. Throughout his career he has addressed various compliance issues with respect to EU directives and Italian legislative and tax matters. He has worked in collaboration with various prominent accountancy and audit firms in Italy.

Other speakers at the conference will be Tonio Fenech, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Finance, Michael Frendo, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Robert Attard, Visiting Lecturer at the University of Malta and Dr Juanita Brockdorff from KPMG – Malta.
