Birgu Walks booklet launched

Malta Independent Sunday, 14 January 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Din l-Art Helwa in collaboration with Birgu local council has published a 56-page booklet entitled “Four Walks in a Historical City”. The booklet is extensively illustrated in full colour, with a detailed account on all historical sites along the way.

Printed by BestPrint and sponsored by Global Capital Group and Del Borgo Wine Bar, the booklet was officially launched earlier this month at the Gallarija Couvre Porte at the offices of Birgu local council. Martin Galea, executive president of Din l-Art Helwa presented the booklet to John Boxall, Mayor of Birgu, who hosted the event.

The author, Anton Attard, introduces the city of Birgu as Citta` Vittoriosa: the Victorious City, a title the citizens of Birgu still have very much at heart after the Great Siege victory in 1565.

All the four walks start from the Bus Terminus just outside the main road leading to the city. From a tour of the colourful alleys of the Collacchio area, through the main gates along the fortifications, to a pleasant stroll stretching along the marina, across the moat near Fort St. Angelo to Kalkara Creek.

Other walks go through the city centre with its numerous palaces and historical buildings, and to the city’s outskirts along the Cottonera Fortifications.

Copies of the booklet at Lm1 each can be obtained from the offices of Birgu local council and Din l-Art Helwa.

To create awareness on local heritage and the environment, Din l-Art Helwa is working closely with other local councils on similar

booklets.
