An explosion occurred in an underground shelter in Mellieha early yesterday and a number of people are believed to have been hurt.

This was the fictitious basis of a simulation exercise held yesterday by the Civil Protection Department. The aim of such a simulation, held in conjunction with the Health Division, was to ensure that the doctors, nurses and personnel at the Emergency Department are prepared for any such eventuality.

Dr Dennis Vella Baldacchino represented the Health Division while Frank Axiaq, Hal Far station officer, coordinated the Civil Protection effort.

Nine new Civil Protection volunteers ended their introductory course thus bringing the department’s complement to 40.
