A General Workers Union statement yesterday welcomed the assurances given by Maltacom’s CEO, David Kay, though it expressed reservations about some parts of the imminent restructuring of the company.

It noted however that Mr Kay did not give any guarantee that the workers will not be asked to reapply for their post, nor that they will have a six-month probation period.

The union expressed satisfaction that no worker will be losing his job and that salaries and benefits will not be touched.

The union statement said Maltacom’s top management contacted the union late on Friday and a meeting will be held on Tuesday for management to explain the situation.

The union said any restructuring exercise must be carried out in agreement between the two sides as the collective agreement states. The union is not against a restructuring exercise as long as its objective is improving the company’s and the workers’ situation.
