Malta Independent Monday, 15 January 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Mqabba beat a determined San Gwann side thanks to a John Paul Muscat second half header. It was a deserved win after a five star second half performance. San Gwann battled equally with their opponents in the first half but were completely dominated in the second half by a superior outfit.

For the leaders John Paul Muscat, was outstanding but other players like Chibueze, Anastasi and Camoin gave a very good account of themselves.

Mqabba made their intentions clear from the start with John Paul Muscat going through on the left flank with the San Gwann goalkeeper blocking with his feet.

On eight minutes Mqabba were rather unlucky when a Chibueze header was cleared off the goal line by Clint Gatt. However San Gwann fresh from their surprising win against promotion candidates Qormi, never gave away an inch and started to share the exchanges with their opponents.

On 28 minutes San Gwann went very close through a close range header by Miguel Francica that was brilliantly saved by Calleja, with the same Calleja saving Buttigieg’s shot from the rebound.

Mqabba with Chibueze and Muscat in top form, went close again with a good Muscat move who passed to Anastasi whose shot was well saved by Spiteri.

The match continued to be fast and highly interesting and the San Gwann goalkeeper Spiteri was again outstanding denying Muscat saving with his outstretched foot.

The second half was completely dominated by Mqabba who created several scoring chances with the San Gwann goalkeeper effecting a string of impressive saves that kept his opponents at bay.

However with 15 minutes to go, Mqabba scored what proved to be the winner, when from a Chibueze cross John Paul Muscat headed home the winning goal.

San Gwann failed to make a reaction and Mqabba could have easily added further goals to their tally, but found in Justin Spiteri a hard nut to crack.
