Football - Bank Of Valletta Premier League: Tarxien go second at half way stage

Malta Independent Monday, 15 January 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

This match brought an end to the first round of the first division championship, with Tarxien Rainbows showing all their worth in their easy 3-0 win over lowly Mosta.

This win puts Jesmond Zerafa's side in second place and with all credentials for a place in the top flight. Tarxien's mission was made easier thanks to their brace in the opening thirteen minutes, which killed Mosta¹s slim hopes of gaining something from this difficult test.

Molzahn's Mosta are now in deep trouble, and will surely have to improve if they wish to keep their status. They have some interesting youngsters in their ranks, but they lacked punch in attack. Midfielder Philip Camilleri is failing to give the side the much needed confidence and vision of play.

Tarxien had a dream start scoring two goals in the first fifteen minutes to practically kill off Mosta's hopes. On eight minutes Alan Tabone made his way on the left flank and crossed a perfect ball for Jonathan Francica who headed past Galea.

Five minutes later Tarxien doubled the score, with another move starting from the left flank. Steve Sadowski passed to Alan Tabone on the edge of the area, and the Tarxien play maker's well placed shot gave Galea no chance to save.

Tarxien were now in full command of the match even though they left the initiative to their opponents. In fact Mosta dominated the last part of the first half, but failed to create dangerous scoring opportunities. Tarxien's goalkeeper Cini who was playing for regular goalkeeper Anthony Curmi, was only called in action to intercept from both flanks. Mosta¹s only real danger came just before half time with a long range shot from Mario Abela that went slightly over the bar.

The second half started with Tarxien showing their worth with some good fast flowing football, and went close to their third scoring when Jonathan Francica’s header went over the bar. On the hour however Mosta orchestrated a good move with James Borg¹s final shot finishing in Cini’s waiting hands.

Mosta had a very good patch pushing all their men forward, with the Rainbows’ defence passing through some anxious moments. However Tarxien with Alan Tabone in splendid form were always dangerous in their breaks with Ryan Darmanin missing a sitter in front of goal.

However Mosat's misery was complete when substitute Andy Mangion scored his first goal of the season when he easily beat Galea with a grounder following another good pass by Alan Tabone.
