Local Football: Norman Darmanin Demajo May contest MFA presidency

Malta Independent Thursday, 18 January 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 21 years ago

Former MFA treasurer Norman Darmanin Demajo (photo) is reported to be interested in contesting Dr Joseph Mifsud for the MFA Presidency when the annual general meeting of the association is held near the end of July.

Dr Mifsud's term, as well as those of the other top officials of the MFA, expires this year and elections for the top posts are to be held accordingly. They are held every three years.

Darmanin Demajo was not available for comment yesterday, but sources close to him said that it was possible that he will be a contestant in next summer's election.

The Malta Independent is also aware that other persons are interested in contesting the election.

Three years ago, Dr Mifsud had been contested for the first time by former Valletta FC president Joe Caruana Curran, but Dr Mifsud had won that contest by 15 votes – 56 in his favour and 41 in favour of Caruana Curran.

Dr Mifsud has been at the helm of the association since 23 July, 1992. He then succeeded Dr George Abela, though earlier, he had occupied the post of Senior Vice-President of the association during Dr Abela's 10-year term of office.

Dr Mifsud will be contesting the UEFA elections once again next week in Duesseldorf, Germany, where he is seeking re-election to the Executive Committee.

Norman Darmanin Demajo had been considered as Dr Mifsud's right hand when the two worked together as treasurer and president respectively of the association, before a dispute over funds allocated for the Millennium Stand at the National Stadium at Ta' Qali broke out between them which led to the resignation of the then treasurer.

Since then, Darmanin Demajo has limited his activities in local football to being a director on the St Andrew's Luxol Board.
