The first international Open tournament of the year 2007, was organised by SC Temploux. It was staged to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the club and was held in the province of Namur in Belgium.

Malta’s Massimo Cremona made it to the quarter- finals, where he was beaten by Italy Antonio Mettivieri 2-4.

In the group stages Cremona had the better of Portugal’s Tiago Sousa 1-0 and Dutchman Robert Thoen 4-3.

In the last 32, in a one-way traffic game, he dominated against Belgium Michael Dupert, winning comfortably 8-1, whereas in the last 16, he eliminated Greece’s Chirstos Agellinas 2-0.

The event attracted the participation of 72 players from ten different countries. Five from the top six world ranked players were present, but surprisingly none of them made it to the semi finals.

Spain’s Flores (4), Italy’s Intra (5) and Belgium’s Pere (6) were knocked out in the last 16 stage while Malta’s Cremona (1) and Holland’s Verhegen (2) were stopped in the quarter-finals.

Belgium’s Valery Dejarden won the final against Holland Mikael de Haas 1-0.

This weekend Cremona will take part in the Grand Prix of England, to be held in Manchester, where other Maltese players Joseph Mifsud, Hansel Mallia and Joseph Borg Bonaci will also take part.
