The National Commission for People with a Disability (KNPD) yesterday filed a judicial protest against the Education Division claiming that a number of state school students with a disability are being discriminated against because they are not allowed to take their medicines.

The KNPD explained that several state school students with a disability are not taking their medicines during school hours to the detriment of their health and education, or are administered the medicine by their parents who have to go to the school to their great inconvenience.

The students are missing out on their education and do not have the same access to the National Minimum Curriculum as other students do, the KNPD said.

The KNPD pointed out that it has held discussions with the authorities since March 2002 and the Education Ministry set up a working group to discuss the issue.

The working group was requested to draw up a number of recommendations to solve the problem.

However, even though recommendations were sent to the authorities over a year ago, the problem is still present and seems it will not be solved in the near future said the KNPD.

The KNPD requested the Education Ministry and Division to find a solution to the problem immediately.
