I must publicly thank Alternattiva Demokratika for being the only party to have the political guts to speak in favour of introducing divorce in Malta.
Both the Nationalist Party and the Malta Labour Party know, in their own hearts, that many Maltese would like to see divorce being made legal. But they stop short of discussing the matter in public because they fear that the Church will reprimand them and, by so doing, they will lose votes.
But, in the long run, I believe that both the MLP and the PN will risk losing more votes unless they make the introduction of divorce one of their priorities. The number of people who would like to start a new legal relationship, after the failure of their first marriage, is on the increase; one day the political parties will have to take this fact into account.
AD had the courage to speak in favour of divorce a long time ago, and still stand by their line of thinking. I urge AD to “keep it up” because Malta needs a political party that works hard on this issue.
