You wrote in your leader, Divorce and Malta (TMID, 13 January), that it is a mistake for the authorities not to take into consideration “the plight of so many people who are trapped in a dead marriage and who have separated and would like to build a new family”.

Malta is the only country in the European Union not to have legalised divorce, and I believe that the time is ripe for the government and opposition to come to terms over the matter and vote unanimously in favour of introducing it.

In your editorial, you write that political parties think they stand to lose if they speak in favour of divorce. Yet, if they both agree on the subject and work together to introduce divorce in Malta then they would not lose anything.

What I would suggest is that the government and opposition hold private meetings on the subject – in the way they do on other matters, such as the electoral districts – and come out together in one common front in favour of divorce.

In this way, the partisan factor of such a hot issue would be eliminated immediately, and the country would be able to move forward on divorce.

Too many people are suffering, and political parties seem to underestimate the fact that today more and more people are in desperate situations in their home. Who knows, these could one day become the “biggest party”.
