The origins of the word Nosferatu is still disputed. Some claim that it comes from the Greek word nosophoros which means “plague-carrier”, while others think it derives from the Romanian word nesuferitul, which translates as “the insufferable one”.

Whichever the interpretation, it certainly conveys a feeling of horror and fear, and rightly so. Nosferatu is one of the first masterpieces of horror cinema, and to this day, over eighty years after it was made, it still has the power to terrify us. The story centres around the mysterious figure of Count Orlock who pursues, and is ultimately destroyed by, the beautiful Mina.

So, tomorrow, as part of the ‘Silents are Golden’ series, Teatru Manoel in collaboration with St James Cavalier, is giving you the opportunity to see this classic of horror cinema. Nosferatu will be shown in Sala Isouard at 8pm. The screening will be accompanied by live music with Sarah Spiteri (Violin) and Alex Vella Gregory (Piano).
