Malta Independent Thursday, 25 January 2007, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Kalkara’s debutant midfield player Stephen Calleja (ex-Vittoriosa Stars) had an excellent match as he had a helping hand in various goals and also managed to find the net during the second period.

In the 29th minute Formosa was beaten by Clint Schiavone for Kalkara’s opening goal with Kirkop managing to equalise in the 34th minute through Charlo Debattista following a cross by Chris Farrugia.

Three minutes later Nicholas Gatt headed Kalkara once again in the lead but a minute before the end of the first-half Mark Ellul equalised for Kirkop from a direct free-kick.

Kirkop were completely dominated after the break with Kalkara scoring two quick goals through Clint Schiavone and Stephen Calleja in the 51st and 54th minute respectively. Fgura vs Mdina K 3-1

George Faure’s team Fgura United gave another good performance as they managed to turn defeat into victory through three goals scored by Clint Ellul in the space of six minutes during the second period.

Fgura found it hard to penetrate the solid Mdina defence with the Knights going close in a quick attack as Andre Vassallo hit high over the bar following a personal effort.

Late in the first-half Fgura created two clear opportunities through Matthew Spiteri and Clint Ellul and just before the break a Silvano Pace free-kick was headed onto the upright by Spiteri.

Mdina came out strongly for the second period and after going very close through James Vella, they took the lead in the 56th minute through Joe Debono’s corner-kick. In the 68th minute Clint Ellul equalised for Fgura and three minutes later the same player headed in a second goal following an indecision by the Mdina defence.

Luqa SA vs Zejtun C 4-2

This was a balanced match which could have gone either way as Luqa obtained their fourth win of the season thanks to goals scored by Randolph Penza and Alessandro Pirrone.

The first-half was a balanced affair with Alessandro Pirrone giving Luqa the lead after a few seconds’ play. Gowin Mifsud equalised for Zejtun in the 16th minute and later on they were unlucky as Norbert Gerada’s free-kick was saved by Agius with the assistance of the crossbar.

Zejtun scored through Dino Falzon in the 25th minute but the goal was disallowed for an offside infringement.

Luqa made it 2-1 in the 35th minute with Randolph Penza finishing off a good move by Pirrone.

Luqa were then unlucky as Penza’s low shot hit the post but they managed to increase their lead in the 48th minute through Randolph Penza.

In the 63rd minute Andy Portelli pulled a goal back for the Corinthians but late in the match Alessandro Pirrone finished off a good move to make it a 4-2 final scoreline.

St Lucia vs Gzira 0-0

A goalless stalemate was a fair result in a monotonous match with Gzira failing to take the few chances they created during the ninety minutes.

After just nine minutes the Maroons were close with Warren Caruana hitting just wide from a good position. In the 13th minute they wasted a clear opportunity as Keith Bonello failed to conclude following a Darren Caruana free-kick and later on Warren Caruana hit wide from close-range.

Gzira had Chris Schembri being shown the red card in the 57th minute for making comments to referee Scriha with Gzira being unlucky to hit the crossbar through Nico Corito and having a goal disallowed for a foul on a Saints’ player.

Referee: Andrea Scriha

Zurrieq vs Sirens 1-0

A penalty scored by Robert Bajada gave Zurrieq a very important win in a match which seemed destined to a goalless stalemate.

The upright stopped a Matthew Geuis free-kick as Sirens tested Azzopardi off a Clyde Grech free-kick.

After the change of ends goal scoring opportunities at both ends continued to be rare. Sirens were close early on through Mark Sciberras and Patrick Barbara with Zurrieq responding through Jason Saliba and Clive Shoma whose efforts just missed the target.

In the 90th minute Zurrieq were awarded a penalty for a foul by Sirens’ goalkeeper Glen Buttigieg and Robert Bajada scored from the spot to give Zurrieq a precious win.

Attard vs Ta’ Xbiex 8-0

Ta’ Xbiex suffered their tenth consecutive defeat when they were beaten by Attard in a match practically decided during the first period.

Attard’s midfield player Josef Axisa scored four goals. Attard took the lead after only a few seconds through Elon Cassar and made it 2-0 in the 11th minute through Josef Axisa following a square pass by Jason Borg.

In the 20th minute Clayton Axisa was sent off from Attard’s substitute bench and two minutes later Jason Borg was fouled by Ta’ Xbiex keeper Grixti with the referee pointing to the penalty spot and Clive Lanzon converted to make it 3-0.

Two minutes after the restart Josef Axisa increased further Attard’s lead and then it was Mark Saliba who scored two opportunistic goals to make it 6-0.

In the final stages of the match Attard added two further goals through Josef Axisa for an incredible 8-0 final scoreline!
