The demolition of the illegal building in Mdina Road, Zebbug continued yesterday and is estimated to be completed by the end of this week, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (Mepa), said yesterday.

In a statement, Mepa said the removal was met with great hostility by the building’s owners and it was only with the help of the police and Armed Forces that Mepa officials could ensure that the law was enforced and the illegal building removed.

On Wednesday, three people were arraigned in court following the disturbances and members of the police force suffered slight injuries.

In a statement, Mepa chairman Andrew Calleja said the authority deplored this sort of behaviour, adding that it will always do its best not only to ensure the safety of the workers but also to guarantee that the law is respected.

He commended Mepa’s officials for carrying out their duty in an exemplary manner in spite of all the harassment and intimidation. He also thanked the police force and the AFM for the their support during the whole operation.
